PRESENTATION
The mission of the CAUPROTECT project is to propose a viable solution to those affected by epileptic seizures through the resolution of a cranial protector that avoids head injuries encephalic. Arises at the initiative of the staff of the association CAU, who in their work with people with autism have witnessed cranioencephalic injuries resulting from instability if wandering or as a result of unpredictable epileptic seizures. This generates the need to use protective helmets.
At present, the protection used by people with disabilities suffering from generalized atonic crises (sudden loss of strength) is limited to the use of sports helmets, especially rugby or hockey. The use of such helmets does not improve the quality of life of the users, but at least it avoids to a certain degree the injuries caused by the falls. In addition, these helmets generate a constant discomfort in users, added to a very negative social impact. Therefore, they are often rejected by users.
PROBLEMATIC
CAU has tested different models of helmets: tied by different methods to avoid extraction by the user, lighter, rugby, medicinal, etc. Protection products have been found for other types of users with a mechanism similar to that of the “AirBags”. They have a gas generator that is usually based on sodium azide tablets and they immediately release about 30 liters of nitrogen that inflame the airbag. As main disadvantages of this type of devices, it should be emphasized that they are single-use and have an excessively high cost. Therefore, those measures do not contemplate something that is considered of essential importance:
- provide personal safety against traumatic brain injuries,
- provide comfort of permanent use, and
- facilitate social-labor integration and the right to a dignified life.
AND THEN?
Universitat Jaume I meets the problem raised by the CAU with the involvement of its engineering departments, and proposes the present project to address it. Sergio García Foundation provides the economic capital to make this project possible.
And then, what can I do?
As a member of this society, you can participate in the project by providing an idea in which the product to be conceived in the project meets the following requirements:
HOW CAN I PARTICIPATE?
Participants must be creative young people aged between 18 and 35 years. You can participate individually or in teams formed by a maximum of four people.
The members of the jury, people with family ties or who maintain stable professional relationships with them, will not be able to participate in the contest.
It is essential that the proposals are unpublished and that they have not been submitted to other competitions or published previously.
KEY DATES
WHO WE ARE

The Universitat Jaume I is oriented towards its surrounding community, aware that the collaboration between all institutions involved in social development is increasingly necessary. This project involves the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Construction and the Department of Industrial Systems Engineering and Design.
Sergio Garcia Foundation was founded in 2002 for the purpose of contributing to the social inclusion of economically deprived children and youth, through social assistance benefits and the practice of sport as free-time activity. For the fulfilment of these purposes, the Foundation grants assistance to individual or collectives integrated in non-profit groups and collaborates with all types of organizations, whose purposes are social assistance.
Association El Cau is an entity founded in 1978 that seeks to improve the quality of life of people with autism and their families. Its mission is to offer individualized support and autonomy to all persons with Autism Spectrum Disorders (hereinafter TEA).
